Architectural Lighting in Constrained Urban Facilities

Lighting plays a significant role in shaping how spaces are experienced, particularly in facilities that sit outside traditional office or commercial environments. Beyond meeting technical requirements, lighting design can enhance usability, support wayfinding, and contribute to a sense of quality and safety, even in highly constrained sites.

BSE delivers lighting design services across a range of project types, working closely with project teams to resolve technical challenges while achieving cohesive and practical outcomes. The Southpoint End of Trip facility in Brisbane demonstrates how lighting design can elevate a functional space while responding to tight physical and regulatory constraints.

    Overview

The Southpoint End of Trip facility at 275 Grey Street, Brisbane, was delivered as part of a dense mixed‑use development within the Brisbane CBD. Originally configured as a carpark, the space was transformed into a high‑quality end of trip facility supporting cyclists and active commuters, within a constrained footprint and limited ceiling heights.

From the outset, lighting formed a central part of the user experience and architectural intent. The project sought to move beyond utilitarian lighting solutions typically associated with end of trip facilities, introducing elements more commonly found in high‑end interior environments.

Lighting Challenges in a Constrained Environment

One of the defining features of the project was a series of custom light boxes installed above the bike racks, acting as both a functional and architectural element within the space. These light boxes incorporated colour‑changing LED technology, creating a distinctive visual identity and an enhanced user experience.

A key challenge in developing the lighting design was ensuring that lighting levels remained compliant across all operating conditions. Certain colour settings, particularly red light when used in isolation, were unable to meet minimum illumination requirements. Resolving this required careful coordination to balance visual intent with regulatory compliance, without compromising the overall design concept.

    Design Development and Delivery

BSE worked closely with the broader design team to integrate multiple lighting components into a cohesive and compliant system. Supplementary lighting was introduced to maintain required lighting levels regardless of colour selection, ensuring both safety and performance requirements were met.

Extensive sampling and prototyping formed a critical part of the design process, particularly for the backlighting of the glass brick wall feature. Serviceability was a key consideration, leading to the development of a bespoke solution in collaboration with Luxon and Digilin. Flexible LED strips were housed within custom channels, allowing individual sections to be accessed and replaced from above without dismantling the surrounding elements.

    Outcome

The completed lighting design delivered a distinctive, functional, and compliant end of trip facility that redefines expectations for this typology. The project was recognised with a Lighting Commendation Award at the 2025 IESANZ Lighting Awards, acknowledging the professionalism, ingenuity, and originality of the lighting solution.

The Southpoint End of Trip project demonstrates how thoughtful lighting design can enhance user experience, maintain compliance, and support long‑term maintainability, even within highly constrained urban environments.
