Cleaner Canberra Powered by Landmark Electric Bus Facility
Supporting cleaner transport, BSE provided engineering design services for the state-of-the-art Woden Bus Depot in Canberra.

Powering Australia’s Largest Electric Bus Depot
BSE was engaged by MD Electrical Group to deliver electrical and lighting engineering design services for the new Woden Bus Depot—Australia’s largest electric bus depot. The $90.5 million-dollar state-of-the-art facility represents a huge step towards the commitment of the ACT Government of achieving a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040.
Designed to accommodate and charge up to 100 electric buses, the depot features rooftop solar panels to help offset charging and operational costs. The depot also includes 12 service bays, a panel shop, a tyre changing bay, and specialised maintenance areas. Amenities have been provided to support approximately 250 Transport Canberra personnel.
A standout feature of the depot is the innovative overhead charging gantry system, which can be lowered at the touch of a button, enabling efficient and safe connections to the electric buses.

The Woden Bus Depot is helping power the ACT’s transition to a zero-emissions public transport network.
Driving a More Sustainable Transport Future
Transport Minister Chris Steel told The Canberra Times that the bus depot “has reduced dead running by around 2000 kilometres each day, and what we’ve been able to do … is use that efficiency to deliver more services.” Dead running refers to the distance buses travel without passengers when positioning for routes.
Beyond its operational advantages, the depot significantly contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and eliminating harmful exhaust fumes.
BSE is proud to have played a key role in this transformative project, helping Transport Canberra better serve the community while meeting its environmental goals.

BSE’s ACT Director Brendon Newham reflected on the achievement saying:
“Delivering the electrical and lighting design for Australia’s largest electric bus depot is a proud milestone for BSE. This project exemplifies how collaboration with our project partners and considered engineering can support the ACT Government’s zero emissions future combining functionality, sustainability and innovation to power a cleaner transport network.”
