Overview
HVAC Upgrades Within an Operational Defence Facility
Holsworthy Barracks is a major Australian Defence Force installation located in south-west Sydney, supporting operational, training, and administrative functions for Army units.
BSE delivered heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrade works across Buildings 141 and 150, involving the replacement of key plant and associated infrastructure to improve system reliability and capacity.
The scope included replacement of cassette-type fan coil units, outdoor condenser units, and associated pipework, controls, and electrical systems. The upgrades were designed to ensure the systems could operate effectively in ambient temperatures of up to 43°C, reflecting site-specific environmental and operational requirements.
Our Role
Mechanical and Electrical Services for HVAC Upgrade Works
BSE provided mechanical and electrical engineering services to support the HVAC upgrades across both buildings.
The works included assessment and analysis of existing conditions to confirm that replacement systems would meet required load demands, along with the design associated with the replacement of fan coil units and externally mounted condenser units.
A total of 25 cassette-type fan coil units and six interconnected external condenser units were replaced, with additional system capacity incorporated where required.
The project also included upgrades to electrical distribution boards, modifications to external plant areas, and replacement of the dedicated air conditioning unit serving the communications room within Building 150.
Outcomes
Upgraded Systems Supporting Reliability in Defence Environments
The works delivered upgraded HVAC systems across both buildings, improving system reliability and capacity within an operational defence environment.
The new systems are configured to perform under elevated ambient conditions, supporting consistent operation during extreme temperatures.
These upgrades enhance the functionality of existing facilities, supporting ongoing use of the buildings as part of Holsworthy Barracks’ operational infrastructure.
