Overview
Providing Social Housing at a Historic Port Kembla Site
The Port Kembla Social Housing development, delivered by Anglicare, provides accommodation for residents aged 55 and over.
BSE’s involvement focused on a new single-storey annex comprising seven villa-style units. The annex forms part of a 30-home social housing development that incorporates the adaptive reuse of the historic Steelworks Hotel. Originally constructed in 1890 as the Great Eastern Hotel, the building is a well-known local landmark within the Wollongong region and now forms part of the completed development.

Our Role
Building Services Engineering for the Residential Annex
BSE was engaged by Growthbuilt to provide electrical, mechanical, fire protection, and hydraulic engineering design services for the seven-unit annex development.
Our involvement supported the delivery of the new villa-style accommodation as part of the broader Port Kembla Social Housing project.

Outcomes
Supporting Valuable Community Housing
The completed development forms part of Anglicare’s social housing community in Port Kembla, providing accommodation for residents aged 55 and over.
Anglicare CEO Simon Miller said:
“This is a very important project for the community, and we are delighted to officially open the Port Kembla development which will provide a safe, secure and life-enriching home to members of the local community. Older Australians, and women in particular, are at higher risk of homelessness, and projects like these are a lifeline to those in need, particularly at a time of significant cost-of-living pressure and worsening housing affordability.”
BSE is proud to have contributed to a project that delivers valuable social housing outcomes for the Port Kembla community.
