We are pleased to announce that Jamie Waygood has been elevated to Associate, Team Leader – Newcastle. To mark the appointment, we sat down with Jamie for a Q&A covering his journey at BSE, his work in the Hunter Region, and life outside of work.
In this new role, Jamie will lead BSE’s continued growth in Newcastle and the greater Hunter Region. While BSE has previously delivered work in the area through its Sydney office, including condition audits for McDonald Jones Stadium and the Newcastle Entertainment Centre and Showground, this appointment represents a key step in strengthening its local presence.
As a mechanical engineer with over 10 years of experience across mining, building services, energy efficiency, and HVAC design, Jamie brings a broad and practical engineering background to the role. His project experience includes major infrastructure and specialist facilities such as NorthConnex, Macquarie Island Research Station, Scone Equine Hospital, and the ANSTO Nuclear Medicine Research Laboratory.
Based Newcastle, Jamie will oversee operations across the region. His focus will be on strengthening local capability, supporting project delivery, and building long-term client relationships through accessible, on-the-ground engineering leadership.
Now, onto the Q&A.
What has your journey at BSE been like so far?
I joined BSE with a focus on mechanical engineering, but also on developing our presence in my hometown of Newcastle. Being part of a national firm that values local expertise has allowed me to grow professionally while laying the groundwork for our expansion into the Hunter Region.
What can Hunter Region clients expect when working with you?
Clients can expect a partnership built on honest engineering, with a strong multi-discipline in-house team from one company to handle all of their services needs on a project. If it’s not civil or structural engineering services, chances are BSE can provide it! My approach is to provide clear, practical engineering solutions that are specifically tailored to the unique requirements of the Newcastle and Hunter markets. Being based locally means I am accessible and fully committed to the long-term success of every project we touch, whilst also having the backing of a larger team of BSE building services engineers.
How do you contribute to BSE’s growth?
My focus is on developing the presence and capability of our Newcastle office. By establishing a local presence that includes dedicated discipline leads, we are ensuring BSE provides a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary service from one team. I am passionate about building a team that can respond quickly and effectively to the growth of the region and help clients get better service on their projects. Watch this space as we continue to add to the team!
What does the new Newcastle office mean for BSE and its clients?
The new office is a significant milestone — it’s a physical commitment to our Hunter Region clients. It means we aren’t just “visiting” for projects; we are part of the community. For our clients, this means better collaboration with engineers who can pronounce Kahibah and know where Carrington is, it means more frequent site presence, and a team of local experts who truly understand the regional landscape.
Can you share a bit about your career background?
I started my mechanical engineering career in the mining and industrial industry with a 2 year graduate program. I then moved into the building services sector. My career has evolved from technical engineering into leadership, where I now focus on project strategy and team development. I’ve always been driven by creating efficient, functional systems that work for the people who use the buildings.
What accomplishments are you most proud of professionally?
I am particularly proud of the role I’ve played in establishing our presence in Newcastle. Successfully transitioning into a more business development-focused role and helping to grow a dedicated local team has been a major highlight. Seeing our regional footprint expand while maintaining the high-quality technical standards BSE is known for is very rewarding. I’m also particularly proud of a site visit I completed with the Australian Antarctic Division in 2024, assessing buildings and fuel systems on Macquarie Island. Definitely a site visit to remember!
What’s Jamie like outside of work?
Family is a big part of my life — I have two young sons who keep me very active! Outside of the office, you’ll usually find me on the golf course, participating in a local parkrun, or playing cricket or soccer with my local teams. I also enjoy getting to Merewether or Caves Beach whenever possible; living in Newcastle offers so many great opportunities to stay active outdoors!
