Overview

Delivering a Category 10 Emergency Response Facility at Western Sydney International Airport

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (IATA: WSI) is being developed to support Sydney’s growing aviation demand, operating as a second major airport without a curfew.

The Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) Facility is designed to achieve a 5 Star Green Star rating and deliver Category 10 emergency response capability, accommodating the largest aircraft, including the Airbus A380. The facility also includes an airside Hot Fire Training Ground (HFTG) and associated support infrastructure.

As a critical component of airport operations, the facility is designed to maintain continuous emergency response capability under all operating conditions.

Our Role

Electrical Design Finalisation for Critical Power and Operational Systems

BSE has been engaged by Comtex to deliver electrical engineering design finalisation services for the ARFF Facility.

A key focus of our work is the reliability of critical power systems, including uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, standby generators, and associated diesel fuel storage and transfer infrastructure. These systems are designed to ensure continued operation during mains power disruption, supporting the facility’s emergency response requirements.

The scope also includes the integration of a private building management system (BMS) and solar photovoltaic systems. The BMS enables optimisation of equipment operation, supporting energy efficiency through controlled system sequencing, reduced overlap between services such as HVAC, and adjustments based on seasonal conditions.

Outcomes

Resilient Electrical Systems Supporting Continuous Emergency Response Capability

BSE’s involvement contributes to the delivery of a robust electrical infrastructure supporting the operational readiness of the ARFF Facility, ensuring critical systems remain functional under all operating conditions.

Through coordinated design finalisation, the electrical systems support both reliability and long-term performance, aligning with the facility’s operational and sustainability objectives.

“It’s a privilege to contribute to such a nationally significant infrastructure project. Our focus is delivering robust, future-ready electrical systems that align with the airport’s long-term operational and sustainability goals. Working collaboratively with Comtex and other stakeholders, we’re proud to help bring the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Facility to life as part of Western Sydney’s next-generation airport.”

The project forms part of the broader delivery of Western Sydney International Airport, with the ARFF Facility providing critical infrastructure to support safe and continuous airport operations.
