Lighting

Lighting design supporting safety, comfort, and architectural expression.

Overview

Lighting Design That Supports Safety and Experience

Lighting design provides functional illumination and architectural expression. It addresses task lighting, safety, emergency lighting, wayfinding, and feature lighting, while contributing to occupant wellbeing.

We treat lighting as both engineering and atmosphere. Early in design, we assess daylight opportunities, glazing performance, and shading strategies to reduce reliance on artificial lighting. We specify LED luminaires and networked controls to enable dimming, zoning, and daylight harvesting. Lighting is coordinated with ceilings, architecture, and acoustics so fittings are sympathetic to the interior. For specialised environments such as galleries or laboratories, we select luminaires and controls that meet strict spectral or dimming requirements. Emergency lighting, photometric compliance, and maintenance access are integral to the design.

The outcome is a lighting solution that enhances safety and visual comfort, reduces energy use, and supports the design intent. Clients receive lighting that is intuitive to operate, simple to maintain, and aligned with energy targets. Where appropriate, lighting contributes to certification outcomes and occupant wellbeing through tuned light spectra and daylight integration.

Lighting Case Study

Southpoint End of Trip – Architectural Lighting Design

  • 01

    Project Overview

BSE delivered lighting design services for the Southpoint End of Trip facility at 275 Grey Street, Brisbane. Completed in late 2023, the project involved the creation of a high‑quality end‑of‑trip facility within a constrained site originally configured as a carpark.

  • 02

    Lighting Design Scope

Lighting formed a central part of the project’s identity and user experience. A series of custom light boxes above the bike racks introduced lighting elements more commonly associated with high‑end interior environments.

  • 03

    Key Challenges

Achieving compliant lighting levels while incorporating colour‑changing lighting elements required careful coordination. Certain colour settings alone could not meet minimum illumination requirements, necessitating supplementary solutions to maintain compliance without compromising design intent.

  • 04

    Lighting Design Strategy

BSE integrated multiple lighting components into a cohesive system, including a backlit glass brick wall illuminated by colour‑changing LED strips. Extensive sampling and prototyping supported serviceable detailing, enabling individual LED sections to be accessed and replaced from above.

  • 05

    Outcomes

The completed lighting design delivered a distinctive, functional, and compliant end‑of‑trip facility. The project was recognised with a Lighting Commendation Award at the 2025 IESANZ Lighting Awards for its professionalism and originality.

This project demonstrates BSE’s capability to deliver architectural lighting solutions that balance compliance, user experience, and long‑term serviceability.
