Acoustics

Acoustic solutions supporting comfort, clarity, and privacy in the built environment.

Overview

Acoustic Engineering for Comfort and Performance

Acoustic engineering shapes how spaces sound and feel, addressing noise, vibration, and sound quality, and playing a key role in how people experience a space — from privacy in offices to clear speech in classrooms and quiet environments for focused or restful activities.

We work collaboratively with architects, engineers, and project teams to set achievable acoustic targets, balancing performance, aesthetics, and budget. Our work includes room acoustic design to manage reverberation and clarity, façade and partition performance to control sound transmission, mechanical plant noise and vibration mitigation, and environmental noise assessment. Using modelling and measurement tools, we predict sound levels, reverberation times, and vibration impacts, advising on materials, construction detailing, and isolation measures to meet targets while maintaining architectural intent. We also support implementation and commissioning, ensuring the acoustic performance is achieved on site as designed.

Our acoustic solutions are practical, cost-effective, and thoughtfully integrated into the building fabric, ensuring performance is achieved without compromising the architecture.

Acoustics Case Study

Gravity Media Docklands – Broadcast‑Grade Acoustic Design

  • 01

    Project Overview

BSE provided acoustic engineering services for a new television studio within the Gravity Media Docklands Production Centre in Melbourne. The studio was constructed inside an existing warehouse annexe and required stringent acoustic performance suitable for live broadcasting.

  • 02

    Acoustic Scope

The project required delivery of a high‑performance acoustic environment addressing both internal sound quality and external noise intrusion from heavy vehicles, an active loading dock, and nearby condenser plant.

  • 03

    Key Challenges

Ground‑borne vibration from vehicle movements, high ambient noise levels, and exposure to rainfall noise events presented significant constraints requiring robust acoustic isolation strategies.

  • 04

    Acoustic Design Strategy

A box‑inside‑a‑box construction was implemented, with high levels of sound isolation, suspended flooring to mitigate ground‑borne noise, high‑absorption control rooms, and carefully treated acoustic penetrations and cabling routes.

  • 05

    Outcomes

The completed studio achieves the acoustic performance required for live broadcasting and recording and is now in daily operational use.

This project demonstrates BSE’s capability to deliver high‑performance acoustic environments within complex, noise‑exposed industrial buildings.
