Overview

Delivering a Broadcast Studio Within an Existing Industrial Building

The Gravity Media Television Studio was delivered within the Docklands Production Centre in Melbourne and comprises a mid-sized television production studio, a fully equipped production control room, and dedicated production office space.

The studio was constructed within an existing annexe, a warehouse originally designed for set storage, presenting significant challenges in achieving the acoustic performance required for live broadcast production.

The surrounding environment included regular heavy vehicle movement, an active loading dock, nearby condenser plant, and environmental noise during high rainfall events, all of which required careful consideration to create a controlled internal acoustic environment suitable for professional broadcasting.

Our Role

High-Performance Acoustic Outcomes for Broadcast Use

BSE partnered with FDC Construction & Fitout, Tall Architects, and Gravity Media to deliver electrical, mechanical, fire protection, hydraulic, and acoustic services across all stages of the project.

A key focus of the design was acoustics. The studio required extremely low internal noise levels and high sound isolation despite being located within a noisy industrial context. To address this, BSE developed a ‘box within a box’ construction approach, isolating the studio structure from the surrounding building fabric.

BSE’s National Team Leader – Acoustic Services, David Luck, led the development of targeted acoustic strategies to respond to site-specific constraints. These included addressing external noise sources such as truck movements, condenser plant operation, and high rainfall events, while coordinating services layouts to maintain acoustic performance without compromising functionality.

Outcomes

Delivering a Broadcast Studio Within an Existing Industrial Building

High levels of sound isolation were achieved for the television studios and broadcast booths, while suspended flooring systems reduced ground-borne vibration and noise transfer from heavy vehicle movements.

Broadcast control rooms were treated with high levels of acoustic absorption to deliver suitable broadcast-quality sound and minimise reverberation.

All penetrations to the studio spaces were acoustically treated, and conduit cabling was designed for dual-purpose use, allowing external cabling to pass through acoustically rated walls without compromising performance.

The completed facility meets the acoustic requirements for live broadcasting and provides a controlled, high-performance studio environment tailored to Gravity Media’s production needs.
