Sustainability

Sustainability engineering focused on performance, value, and occupant wellbeing.

Overview

Practical Sustainability with Measurable Outcomes

Sustainability engineering at BSE focuses on reducing environmental impact and operational cost, while improving occupant wellbeing.

We integrate ESD thinking from concept through to operation. Using modelling tools, we test energy, daylight, and thermal responses, and we evaluate options for renewables, efficient plant, and water reuse. We apply passive measures first — orientation, façade strategy, thermal mass, and natural ventilation — then optimise active systems. Our team produces transparent payback and lifecycle analyses so clients can weigh capital versus operating costs. We also provide guidance on certification pathways such as Green Star, NABERS, and WELL, and we can perform JV3 energy modelling where alternative compliance is necessary.

The result is a building that meets regulatory requirements, reduces energy and water use, and provides a healthier internal environment. Clients benefit from lower operating costs, reduced carbon footprint, and improved occupant satisfaction. Our sustainability work is rooted in measurable outcomes, not slogans, and is tailored to each client’s ambition and budget.

Sustainability Case Study

Opal HealthCare – Portfolio‑Wide Solar PV Deployment

  • 01

    Project Overview

As part of Opal HealthCare’s commitment to sustainability, BSE supported the rollout of solar photovoltaic systems across more than 70 aged care facilities nationwide. The program spans New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia, focusing on reducing energy consumption and improving operational efficiency across the portfolio.

  • 02

    Sustainability Scope

BSE delivered sustainability‑led electrical engineering services to support the assessment, planning, and coordination of PV systems across multiple sites, aligning renewable energy solutions with operational requirements and environmental objectives.

  • 03

    Delivery Approach

BSE undertook site inspections and system sizing assessments using roof layouts and energy data, developed technical design briefs to standardise system requirements, and prepared documentation to support coordinated tendering. Contractor prequalification and tender assessment ensured system performance and delivery consistency across the rollout.

  • 04

    Outcomes

The structured rollout supported consistent delivery across a national portfolio, enabling improved energy performance while accommodating site‑specific conditions.

This project demonstrates BSE’s capability to deliver scalable, portfolio‑level sustainability initiatives across complex operational estates.
