Delivering a Coordinated Solar Program Across a National Aged Care Portfolio
Opal HealthCare operates a large network of aged care communities across Australia, where reliable and efficient building performance is critical to day-to-day operations.
As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Opal initiated a national rollout of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across more than 70 care communities spanning New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia.
The program involves the integration of solar systems into existing operational facilities, combining site-based assessment, system sizing, and coordinated procurement to support consistent delivery across a geographically distributed portfolio.
Our Role
Sustainability-Led Electrical Engineering Across a Multi-Site Rollout Program
BSE is delivering sustainability-led electrical engineering services across the solar rollout program, supporting multiple stages from initial feasibility through to procurement and implementation.
Our work includes site inspections and feasibility assessments, with system sizing informed by roof configurations, available area, and site energy consumption profiles. Technical design briefs were developed defining system components and performance requirements, including photovoltaic panels, inverters, cabling, controls, and monitoring systems.
BSE also coordinated the preparation and management of tender packages across the program, including contractor prequalification, tender issue, and detailed evaluation of tender responses. This approach supports consistency in system design, procurement, and delivery standards across all sites.
System capacities vary depending on site constraints and energy demand, ranging from smaller installations through to systems exceeding 250 kW at selected locations.

A Scalable Approach to Solar Integration Across Operational Aged Care Environments
BSE’s involvement supports the coordinated rollout of photovoltaic systems across multiple Opal HealthCare communities, building on earlier delivery phases and contributing to improved energy performance across the portfolio.
The program establishes a repeatable and scalable approach to solar integration within operational aged care environments, enabling efficient delivery while responding to site-specific constraints and operational requirements.
Through consistent design and procurement strategies, the rollout supports long-term reductions in operational energy use, while ensuring systems are implemented in a coordinated and reliable manner across a national portfolio.
