Overview
Transforming a Constrained Space into a Premium End-of-Trip Facility
The Southpoint End of Trip facility at 275 Grey Street, Brisbane, is located within a mixed-use development housing tenants including Virgin Australia and Flight Centre.
Originally configured as a carpark, the space was transformed into a high-quality end-of-trip facility supporting cyclists and active commuters within a constrained footprint and limited ceiling heights.
Lighting forms a central element of the design, with custom light boxes installed above the bike racks introducing architectural lighting features typically associated with high-end interior environments.

Our Role
Integrated Building Services Design with a Focus on Lighting Performance
BSE was engaged by Rhombus PM to deliver electrical, mechanical, fire protection, hydraulic, and lighting engineering design services for the facility.
A key focus of the project was the integration of lighting systems within a constrained environment. Custom light boxes incorporating colour-changing LED technology were developed as both functional and architectural elements.
Achieving compliant lighting levels across all operating conditions required careful coordination, with supplementary lighting introduced to maintain required illumination levels regardless of colour selection.

Outcomes
A Distinctive and Award-Winning End-of-Trip Facility
The completed facility delivers a distinctive and functional end-of-trip environment, combining architectural lighting with performance-driven design.
Extensive sampling, prototyping, and coordination were undertaken to develop feature lighting elements, including the backlighting of the glass brick wall. Serviceability was a key consideration, with BSE working with Luxon and Digilin to develop a solution where flexible LED strips were housed within custom channels, allowing individual sections to be accessed and replaced without disruption to surrounding finishes.
Lighting systems were coordinated to maintain compliance, safety, and usability across all operating conditions while enhancing the overall user experience.
The project was recognised with a Lighting Commendation Award at the IESANZ Lighting Awards, acknowledging the professionalism, ingenuity, and originality of the lighting solution.
“From arrival, it is clear that the Southpoint EOT offers something distinct. Visitors are immediately greeted by a striking backlit glass brick wall, illuminated by colour-changing LED strips that shift in coordination with other lighting elements to create a dynamic and ever-changing visual experience. A key consideration was ensuring compliant lighting levels across the space, regardless of the colour setting. For example, red light alone could not meet minimum lighting levels, so supplementary lighting was introduced to meet code requirements.”
