Co-located Hospitality Concepts in North Adelaide
Gelato Messina and Shadow Baking were delivered as a combined hospitality offering within a shared tenancy in North Adelaide, bringing together gelato and bakery production within a single customer-facing environment.
Gelato Messina, founded in 2002 in Darlinghurst, has expanded to multiple locations across Australia and internationally, with a focus on in-house production and ingredient sourcing. Shadow Baking was established by Messina’s head chefs, combining traditional Australian flavours with French baking techniques in a contemporary bakery concept.
The project integrates both brands within a single entry and customer experience, requiring coordinated services design to support two distinct but complementary operations.
Our Role
Building Services Design for a Combined Food Production Environment
BSE delivered mechanical and electrical engineering design services for the project.
The mechanical scope included heat load calculations relative to base building allowances, review of exhaust and commercial kitchen hood design, and preparation of kitchen exhaust layouts.
The design also incorporated provision for duct access panels and acoustic treatment where required, supporting both operational performance and integration within the tenancy.
Outcomes
A Coordinated Environment Supporting Dual Hospitality Operations
The completed design supports the operational requirements of both gelato and bakery production within a shared tenancy, enabling efficient use of space and services.
The integrated approach allows both brands to operate cohesively while maintaining their distinct offerings, contributing to a unified customer experience.
This project represents BSE’s second engagement with Gelato Messina, building on prior experience to support the delivery of additional locations.
