Overview
Building Services Standards for National Retail Formats
Foodstuffs New Zealand is one of the country’s leading grocery retailers, operating a nationwide network of supermarket and large-format retail brands. Pak’nSave stores operate as high-volume warehouse retail formats, while New World stores are full-service supermarkets.
BSE was engaged to support the development of building services design standards and template documentation to enable consistent delivery across these store formats. The work focused on establishing practical, repeatable solutions to support future retail development across multiple locations.

Our Role
Design Standardisation for Supermarket and Large-Format Retail
BSE developed building services design standards for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire protection, and vertical transportation systems, establishing typical drawings and specifications for Pak’nSave stores (typically 4,500 to 8,500 square metres) and New World stores (typically 3,000 to 4,500 square metres).
The scope covered concept design and design development, resulting in documentation suitable for tender and implementation. Design outcomes prioritised constructability and operational efficiency, with solutions developed to reduce long-term maintenance requirements while remaining adaptable to different site conditions and store configurations.

Outcomes
A Consistent Foundation for Future Retail Development
The project established a coordinated set of building services design standards to support the ongoing development of Foodstuffs retail formats across New Zealand.
The documentation provides a clear and consistent framework for future store delivery, supporting efficient design, procurement, and construction outcomes across multiple projects.
BSE’s involvement demonstrates capability in developing standardised building services solutions that can be applied across varied sites while maintaining alignment with operational and performance requirements.
