Overview
Transforming AIE's Watson Campus
The Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) is undertaking a multi-stage redevelopment of its Watson Campus in Canberra, creating a new hub for film, games, visual effects, and interactive media education.
AIE is a not-for-profit educator and recognised leader in specialist games and visual effects education, delivering courses spanning game development, animation, film, and VFX.
Stage 1 of the redevelopment includes the establishment of an interim standalone campus comprising three buildings: a Student Production Hall, Production Hall Facilities with Workshop, and an Education and Industry Building.
The project forms part of a $200 million-plus, three-stage renewal, with future stages planned to include student accommodation, additional production halls, and further Education and Industry spaces.

Our Role
Building Services Design Supporting Future Expansion
AIE directly engaged BSE to provide mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineering services for Stage 1 of the redevelopment.
As part of the broader campus renewal, BSE’s designs take into consideration future stages of the project. The electrical scope includes review of solar energy integration, design of power infrastructure for electric vehicle charging facilities, and development of telecommunications layouts including distribution frames and outlets.

Outcomes
Supporting the Growth of Australia's Creative Industries
The completed campus is projected to accommodate up to 600 students by 2038 and operate as an integrated living, learning, and working destination.
The redevelopment is intended to establish Canberra as a major destination for games and film education, research, and production while attracting larger interstate and international productions and creating greater opportunities for students and graduates entering the industry.
“We’re proud to be part of a project that puts Canberra on the map for film and game production. We’re grateful to AIE for trusting us to help deliver the engineering behind a campus that will open up real opportunities for local students and the creative industry.”
– Brendon Newham, Director – ACT
AIE Chairman and CEO John De Margheriti has stated that the vision for the campus is to create greater opportunities for students and graduates through industry placements while helping attract larger-scale film productions to the ACT.
BSE is proud to be part of this significant project and to support the redevelopment of AIE’s Watson Campus.
