A Science Facility Integrating Learning and Building Performance

The King’s School Science Learning Centre represents a cutting-edge educational facility designed to inspire and educate the next generation of scientists, architects, engineers, and builders.

The building includes 18 state-of-the-art student laboratories, a dedicated tertiary research centre built to PC2 standards, and LED lighting. Building energy usage is monitored and controlled via a KNX-based management system, with a 20 kW photovoltaic system installed that also serves as an interactive learning feature for students.

Building Services Design Supporting a High-Performance Learning Environment

BSE designed the mechanical, electrical, and vertical transportation services for the facility. This included automated window systems with sophisticated controls to minimise air conditioning usage while ensuring comfort and operational efficiency.

Outcomes

A Facility Where Building Systems Contribute to Learning

A key feature of the project is the incorporation of “learning points” throughout the building, demonstrating to students how building services work and operate in real time.

Each laboratory is designed to maximise occupant comfort and attentiveness while dramatically reducing energy consumption. The facility showcases sustainable technologies and provides live data for students to study.

Walking through the atrium or working in a lab, students experience a smart building that actively explains and optimises its internal environment.

The project was recognised as a finalist in the 2014 Buildings and Structures category at the Sydney Engineering Excellence Awards (SEEA).

The development also reflects a broader approach to sustainability and design, supporting positive outcomes for the school community and the wider campus environment.
